Media Production

One of the best ways to become fluent in digital media is to understand how to create it yourself. I have learned just as much about media literacy through reporting and creating broadcast videos as from reading media theory or psychological studies. When producing a story of any medium you have to ask the questions of who, what, where, and why you are creating that piece, and understand the impact you are striving to make.

By understanding the inner-workings of the journalistic process, I have a better sense how I should approach my news feed - finding credible sources, sharing meaningful articles and not getting caught up in gimmicky headlines.

Media production also allows for a method of engaging constructivist teaching, especially in K-12 classrooms. Using storytelling tools for media education allows students to express themselves creatively and delve into curiosities about the world, no matter what their interests may be. I believe that media education is not just for journalists and that making videos and writing stories teaches students empathy, to be more conscious media consumers and how to be active members of their local and digital community.

JOUR 21100 Visual Journalism

In Visual Journalism I learned every aspect of the storytelling process through the video medium. We researched for our stories, set up our camera equipment to shoot interviews on the scene, wrote voice over scripts and edited the final package in Adobe Premiere Pro. This class taught me how to be an effective storyteller, and share nuanced issues in a two minute video segment. Here are two of my final projects.

This feature story highlights an Ithaca College celebrity, Breakfast the Llama, and how animals help relieve stress for students during finals week.

Here I continued on my research about the culture of e-cigarettes on college campuses from Intro to Journalism and highlighted more of the student perspective in this news story.
